Columbus Public Schools in Fatal Bus Accident Settlement |
FAMILY REACHES SETTLEMENT WITH THE COLUMBUS PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN DEADLY SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT
A settlement was reached in a case involving the tragic death of Asa Mayle, the six year old son of Jessica Cruz. On January 4, 2007, Asa passed away after being struck by a Columbus Public School bus at the corner of Scottwood Road and Coburg Road. Asa’s family and the school district investigated the facts surrounding the incident and a settlement of all claims relating to Asa’s death was reached. The Columbus Public Schools and their insurance company have agreed to pay $675,000 to Asa’s family as part of this settlement. Alternative Dispute Resolution was utilized to help the parties reach a settlement.
The parties wish to thank Mediator Robert Hanson who was instrumental in focusing on the complicated issues while assisting the parties in assessing the risks and expenses associated with litigation and trial. Asa’s family wishes to thank The Columbus Public Schools for changes made since the accident that have made it safer for children walking to and from Scottwood Elementary. Asa’s family would also like to thank the Columbus community for the many condolences and support they received, especially the many children who attended school with Asa and the many members of The Columbus Public Schools. The family remains hopeful that stop signs will be placed at the intersection of Scottwood Road and Coburg Road by the City of Columbus to make this area even safer for children.
