What is Ozempic?

Also known as semaglutide, Ozempic is a prescription drug that mimics the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone, which produces more insulin.

People with type 2 diabetes cannot produce insulin and use Ozempic injections to control blood sugar levels.

When Ozempic users take higher doses, they often experience appetite suppression and feel fuller. When paired with exercise and a healthy diet, Ozempic causes weight loss.

Although the FDA hasn’t approved Ozempic for weight loss, it did approve Wegovy, a semaglutide medication like Ozempic, as a weight loss treatment in 2023.

The lack of FDA approval has not stopped Ozempic and other semaglutide drugs from being prescribed for off-label use, including weight loss.

Am I Eligible to File an Ozempic Lawsuit?

Studies have shown that Ozempic increases the risk of gallbladder disease and gallstones. In fact, the link between Ozempic and gallbladder disease is strong enough that it’s listed as a potential side effect.

Another rare but serious side effect of Ozempic is gastroparesis, or stomach paralysis, a chronic condition that slows and/or stops food from moving along in the digestion process.

Because it is a chronic condition, it is something you will deal with for the rest of your life, from stomach pain to medical bills for the surgical insertion of a feeding tube.

If you have experienced complications such as gallbladder disease or gastroparesis after taking Ozempic, you may be able to file a lawsuit.

Is There a Class Action Lawsuit Against the Makers of Ozempic?

Currently there is no class action lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic.

However, in August 2023, a woman named Jaclyn Bjorklund took legal action against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lily, the manufacturers of Ozempic and Mounjaro, respectively.

In her lawsuit, Bjorklund alleged Novo Nordisk failed to warn her doctors about the increased risk of gastroparesis associated with Ozempic.

Aside from developing gastroparesis, Bjorkland also alleged her severe vomiting, pain, and loss of her teeth were caused by Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Per a December 2023 Reuters article, Bjorkland’s lawyers have asked the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to consolidate other Ozempic lawsuits into a single case.

This may open up the door for a class action lawsuit against Novo Nordisk and other drug manufacturers.

In the meantime, you may still seek compensation for the pain and suffering Ozempic or another semaglutide weight loss drug has caused.
